The House takes up consideration of a no-torture amendment today, with the White House threatening to veto two major defense bills if they curb abuse of detainees, USA Today reports. As reader N writes, "If the stakes weren't so very high, it would almost be worth it to watch the White House piddle away the last crumbs of its moral authority on this one. But the stakes are that high."

Hilzoy at Obsidian Wings has an important post on another proposed Defense bill amendment that has gotten far less attention. It would deny prisoners at Guantanamo Bay ever having any right to challenge their detentions in US courts. That vote too could also come as soon as today, Hilzoy warns. Check out her post.

Update: Hilzoy has an update on yesterday's vote, which apparently passed.
